It’s that time of year. You’ve just moved into your apartment, are finally settling in, and suddenly you’re already being asked about renewing your lease for the 2018-2019 lease term! You may be thinking “I don’t even know if I’m going to like who I’m living with or where I’m living now, so how am I supposed to choose for next year already?”. We totally understand!
Madison’s campus area market is a unique one. Almost all apartments in the campus area begin leasing for the following fall nearly 11 months in advance. It seems crazy, we know, but MPM adheres to this schedule in order to be as fair and efficient as possible for our residents and property owners.
Now that the craziness is over and you’ve had a few days to get settled into your new apartment, you can finally breathe a sigh of relief. While the stress of your actual move may be over, there are still a few things that you should take care of after moving to a new place in order to prevent headaches later. Check out these tips that we recommend to new residents:
Read the Lease
Even though you should have already read the lease at the time of the lease signing, it’s not fresh in your mind. Read it, and then read it again. You may have just initialed where you were told to, but you should have received a copy of your lease with your move-in packet or emailed to you. If you did not receive one, ask your landlord or property representative for a copy. Make sure you understand everything you are responsible for, like making sure your rent is turned into the office before the first of the month, not just postmarking it by then. Continue reading

One of our recent blog posts was about Getting Ready to Move in Madison for Non-Campus Area Residents, so this week we wanted to share our tips for Campus area residents and share what to expect while moving in and out during the crazy August in Madison. Be prepared and know what to expect!
Prep for Moving
-Be sure to update your landlord with your forwarding address. Don’t wait until the last minute. With the stress of moving, it could slip your mind. Let your landlord know your new address as soon as you secure your next place.
-Change your mailing address- you can do that through USPS here.
-Update any magazine or newspaper subscriptions with your new address.

Moving season for non-campus area apartments is here, so be prepared and avoid stress by following these helpful tips and advice.
If you plan on using a moving company to move, start looking early and find the best fit for you. It’s busy moving season, so be sure to book them well in advance. We all dread seeing that gas and electric bill come in the mail each month. Now that spring is here and the warmer weather is arriving, we can start turning off those heating sources and start saving a little bit of money. In addition to turning your heat off, here are 5 ways YOU can save on energy in your apartment this spring.
1. Unplug/ turn off
Be sure to turn off all lights when you leave a room. This not only helps with the electricity, but it will help keep the room cooler for any lights that give off any heat. Same goes for fans; be sure to turn off all fans when you leave a room. No need to use a fan when you are not in the room. Unplug appliances while not in use, like your coffee maker, computers and TV’s. Even though you’re not using them, having them plugged in still uses some energy.
Spring has sprung! Time for warmer weather, sunshine, and April showers that bring May flowers. It’s also time for some spring cleaning! We all dread it, but once it’s done, it feels so good! You’ve probably already read our previous posts about spring cleaning (if not- check them out here and here), but we are here to share with you some out of the ordinary spring cleaning ideas for your apartment.
Clean Your Rugs
Whether it’s a large area rug or a small entry way rug, they may look okay, however they may be hiding lots of dust and dirt. Start by taking them outside and shaking them out. Hang them over your balcony and use a broom to “smack” the dirt out. Once that’s done, sprinkle some baking soda or carpet deodorizer on them, let them sit and vacuum over them. Another way to clean them is to rent a carpet cleaner and run it over the rugs.
Finding a new apartment can sometimes be challenging. What’s more challenging is if you are unable to view a unit before signing a lease for it. Whether you are unable to get off work during the available showing hours, you live out of state, or you are moving from another country, we have a few tips for you when it comes to signing for an apartment “sight unseen”.
