Calling Madison Home: Creating a Space that’s Uniquely You This Winter

Winter means spending a lot of time indoors. If you haven’t already spruced up the place and really made it feel like home, now is the time! From setting up your furniture in a way that makes studying easier to adding décor that shows off your flare, there are many ways to create a space that’s uniquely you.  One good is to strike a balance balance between creating a space that’s aesthetically pleasing while making sure your apartment is truly functional for your lifestyle.

Pillows and Blankets

Get a little comfy cozy by incorporating pillows and blankets into your living space. How can someone enjoy time at home in the living room without a warm blanket and pillow to comfort any long movie?! Get something that reminds you of growing up or a galactic cat style “just because.” You get our point; get something that you know is yours and makes the place just seem like it is your own.

Coffee Table

Kick up your feet and relax. Make the common area in your apartment a place where you and your roommates gather by adding a coffee table or end tables. It’s a great idea to make sure there’s some sort of table space near every couch and chair.  Throw a cool coffee table book out for guests or a unique decoration as a conversation piece.

Lighting

Natural sunlight is limited this time of year. Find a unique lamp and place it on your end table. Or, you can string up some lights along a favorite area in your home. Nicely lit spaces feel warmer and more inviting, especially in the winter.

Art and Photos

If your mom sent you a picture of the “fam,” don’t be afraid to set it out. Or, take family pictures with the roommates in ugly sweaters or badger gear, and order a large canvass print to put on the wall. If you’re having a hard time agreeing with your roommates, take a day trip art shopping. State Street has some great finds when it comes to wall décor. Craft stores in Madison also have a great selection on wall art to choose from.

Decorating for the Holidays

If you will be around for the Holidays, get some decorations up! A mini-tree, candles, lights or old school window clings will work; any decoration is guaranteed to make your home feel festive and cheerful.

“Remodeling” Your Apartment and Life

Have you ever felt like things were just the “same ol’ same ol’”? You feel like you wear the same stuff, eat the same stuff, and see the same things all the time.

Hey you!

It’s a new year, so why not change things up a bit. How about you start with your apartment?

Reorganize.

Move the furniture a little. Put your bookshelf items in a different order, and create some Zen.

Add something new to the mix. Replace a staple item that you see every day, and you will be amazed how different things feel.

Use a cover up. Visit a fabric store, and find something that fits your ideal décor. Use fabric to cover part of a wall, a piece of furniture or a table.

Hide things. Use decorative bins and baskets to get your clutter out of eye sight.

Try New.

Take a different route. Whether this is in your apartment or on your way to class, finding a new way to get to the next thing on your list will make it feel less monotonous.

Try a new brand or different flavor. Maybe this means upgrading to the two ply toilet paper or using a new air freshener scent. Both of those things might seem silly, but they could be just what the doctor ordered to make your world feel completely new.
